Normal tsunamis come from moving earth plates under the sea. They can reach heights of about 30 meters. But megatsunamis are different. They happen when a huge amount of material falls into water. This could be a landslide or a volcano. Even a meteor from space can cause one.

When this material hits the water, it makes a giant splash. This splash pushes the water up and out. This creates waves that can be hundreds of meters tall.

Scientists found a trim line in the trees there. This is a line where old trees were killed by the wave. This helped them prove these giant waves really happen.
