Scientists say it was the strongest ever recorded. It lasted for ten minutes. The quake happened near a place called Lumaco.

This event was a megathrust earthquake. This means it happened where two large plates of the Earth's crust meet. The Nazca plate was sliding under the South American plate. This movement built up a lot of stress. When the plates finally slipped, they released huge power.

The shaking caused big waves called tsunamis. These waves traveled across the Pacific Ocean. They hit many places like Japan and Hawaii.

In Hilo, Hawaii, the waves were very high. They killed 61 people there. In Chile, the waves were also very strong. They destroyed many boats and buildings. One ship named Canelo was wrecked in a river.

The earthquake also caused landslides in the mountains. Two days later, a volcano called Cordón Caulle erupted. This was a very big and busy time for the Earth.
