Rogue waves are giant waves in the open ocean.

They are much bigger than the waves around them. Scientists define them by their height. A rogue wave is more than twice the height of the average large waves in that area.

These waves are not tsunamis. Tsunamis come from the ocean floor moving, like during an earthquake. Rogue waves happen because of the way water moves. Sometimes, strong winds or currents make waves travel at different speeds. These waves can merge into one massive wall of water. Other times, a single wave might pull power from nearby waves. This makes it grow very large very quickly.

For a long time, people thought these waves were just myths. Sailors told stories, but many scientists did not believe them. This changed in 1995 at the Draupner platform in the North Sea.

A laser sensor recorded a huge wave there. It was much taller than the waves nearby. This proved that rogue waves are real. Today, we use satellites and radar to study them.
