High-power sound waves can be very strong. They can hurt or break eardrums. This causes pain or makes a person unable to act. Lower power waves can cause nausea or discomfort. Some sounds might even make eyeballs vibrate. This could make a person's vision look strange.

Police and military groups use these tools. One tool is called a long-range acoustic device, or LRAD.

Scientists also study ultrasound. This is sound that is too high for humans to hear. Tests on mice show that very strong ultrasound can hurt lungs or guts. Sound is a tool that can change how a body feels or works.
