There are two main ways to use sonar. Passive sonar means just listening. It listens for the sounds made by other ships. Active sonar makes its own sound. It sends out a pulse of sound. This sound hits an object and bounces back. This bounce is called an echo.

People have used sound to find things for a long time. In 1490, Leonardo da Vinci used a tube. He put the tube in the water. He put his ear to the tube to hear boats.

Modern sonar grew during World War I. It was needed to find submarines. One early system was called ASDIC. This was a secret name used by the British. They used special crystals to make the sound. Later, scientists found better ways to make sound. They used things like quartz or ADP crystals. These parts help turn electricity into sound waves.

Today, sonar is very useful. It helps robots move through the ocean. It can even help people find debris on the sea floor.
