Even though they are large, sailors call them boats. This is a long naval tradition.

Most submarines have a long, round body. They often have a tall part on top. In America, people call this a sail. In Europe, they call it a fin. This part holds tools for sensing and talking. It also holds a periscope to see above the waves.

How do they dive and surface? They use ballast tanks to change their buoyancy. Buoyancy is the force that helps things float. To dive, the boat lets water into these tanks. To rise, the boat uses air to push the water out. They also use diving planes to help steer.

People use submarines for many jobs. Some navies use them for protection or stealth. Other people use them for marine science. They also use them for salvage or to find old things. Some even take people on tours under the sea.
