By 1747, Nathaniel Symons patented a design using leather bags as ballast tanks. In 1775, David Bushnell created the Turtle, which was the first military submarine. It was an acorn-shaped boat that used screws for propulsion.

As technology grew, submarines became much more capable and complex. The French launched the Plongeur in 1863, which used compressed air instead of human power.

In 1864, the Confederate submarine Hunley became the first military sub to sink an enemy vessel. This was done using a gunpowder-filled keg on a spar. Later, in 1866, the Peral became the first submarine to dive and cruise under crew control.

Today, submarines are much more advanced than the early wooden or metal boats. They range from tiny two-person subs to huge vessels like the Russian Akula-class. Some of these massive boats can stay underwater for six months at a time. They can also reach depths that would be impossible for a human diver to survive. To control their depth, submarines manage their buoyancy using ballast tanks. To dive, the crew allows water to enter these tanks, making the boat heavier. To resurface, they use air to push the water out of the tanks.

Steering and propulsion are also essential for underwater navigation. Most submarines utilize a propeller or a pump jet located at the rear to create movement. They also use hydrodynamic control fins, often called diving planes, to direct their path. Earlier designs featured a "conning tower," which was a separate pressure hull located above the main body.
