Humans utilize these boats for commercial, artisanal, and recreational purposes. While commercial vessels focus on large-scale harvesting, recreational boats often prioritize leisurely cruising. These smaller vessels range from simple dinghies and sailboats to massive superyachts and chartered cruise liners. 
The materials used to construct these ships have changed significantly over time. Historically, most fishing boats were built of wood. Today, wood is used less often because it requires high maintenance and has lower durability. For smaller vessels up to 25 metres, which have a displacement of up to 100 tonnes, builders increasingly use fibreglass. For larger vessels exceeding 25 metres, steel is the standard material. This shift toward steel and fibreglass provides the strength needed for heavy ocean work. 
Humanity's history with fishing boats began thousands of years ago. The oldest archaeological evidence includes dugout canoes from the Neolithic Period, dating back 7,000 to 9,000 years. These were carved from coniferous tree logs using simple stone tools. Early vessels had limited range and were mostly used near shorelines for hunting and fishing. Around 4000 B.C., Egyptians developed long, narrow boats powered by many oarsmen. They eventually mastered assembling wooden planks into a ship hull. They used woven straps to lash planks together and stuffed reeds or grass into the seams to seal them. An example of this skill is the Khufu ship, found intact near the Great Pyramid of Giza. 
In Scandinavia, innovators changed how boats were structured. People near Kongens Lyngby in Denmark developed segregated hull compartments. This design allowed builders to increase the overall size of the boats. The wooden Hjortspring boat was an example of this early engineering, paddled by a crew of two dozen. By 1000 A.D., the Norsemen were masters of the ocean. They built different types of ships for specific needs. The knarr was a wide trading boat for cargo, while the longship was a long, narrow, and fast raiding vessel. Their fishing boats were often scaled-down versions of these larger designs. 
Specific ship designs later revolutionized the fishing industry in Europe. Around 1415, the Dutch developed the Herring Buss. This was a massive, 20-metre long ship with a displacement of 60 to 100 tons. It used long drifting gill nets to catch herring. In the 17th century, the British created the dogger to fish the rough North Sea. These were sturdy, 15-metre long vessels with a maximum beam of 4.5 metres. A single dogger could carry one tonne of bait and return with six tonnes of fish. 
The 19th century saw the rise of the Brixham trawler, which changed deep-sea fishing forever. These vessels featured a sleek build and a tall gaff rig for high speeds. They were strong enough to tow large trawls in deep water. This design caused a massive migration of fishermen to northern English ports. The village of Grimsby grew into the largest fishing port in the world by the mid-19th century. In 1854, the Grimsby Dock was opened by Queen Victoria as the first modern fishing port. It used hydraulic power for its cranes and dock gates. 
Technology shifted again with the advent of steam power in the 1870s. David Allan, working in Leith, converted the first drifter to steam power in 1875. In 1877, he built the Pioneer LH854, the world's first screw-propelled steam trawler. These new boats were much more powerful than sailing vessels. They used masts as cranes to lift catches and steam capstans to haul in heavy nets. To keep the crew safe, they featured tall, narrow funnels called "woodbines." These funnels released thick coal smoke high above the deck.
