Lightweight multihulls can also reach a plane more easily. This reduces their wetted surface area and lowers drag. They can also navigate shallow waters because they have a much reduced draft. 
Sailboat designs vary greatly based on their mast and sail configurations. The sloop is the most common modern design. It features one mast and two sails, usually a mainsail and a headsail. A cutter is similar but carries its mast further aft. This allows for two foresails, called a jib and a staysail. A catboat is unique because its single mast is mounted far forward. It typically does not carry a jib. 

Keel shapes also change how a boat performs in the water. Most modern monohulls use fin keels, which are deep and heavy but short. Traditional yachts often used a full keel that spanned half the length of the boat. Some modern boats use a winged keel, which is shallow but has weight in two sideways wings. There are even canting keels that move weight to the upwind side. For shallow water, sailors can use a centerboard or a daggerboard. These are retractable, lightweight keels that can be pulled up. 
Even when the wind is not blowing, sailboats can still move using auxiliary propulsion. This is an alternate means of movement used for close maneuvering or when the wind dies. The method used depends on the size of the vessel. Very small boats might use a paddle or oars. Larger boats often use an outboard motor mounted on the transom. Some larger vessels even employ an inboard engine. This ensures the crew can still navigate even without wind power.
