A sailboat is a vessel moved by the wind.

It uses sails to catch wind power to move across the water. These boats are smaller than large sailing ships. There are many different types of sailboats. People tell them apart by their size and their hull shape. They also look at how many masts they have.

To stay steady, many boats use a keel. The keel is like the backbone of the boat.

On a monohull, the keel often holds ballast. Ballast is a heavy weight made of lead or iron. This weight sits very low to keep the boat upright. It can be 20 to 50 percent of the boat's weight. This helps the boat stay stable in the water. Some boats use a centerboard, which is a light keel that can pull up. This lets the boat sail in shallow water.

Sailboats come in many shapes and styles.

A sloop is the most common modern boat. It has one mast and two sails. A cutter is similar but has a mast further back. This allows for two different front sails. A catboat has a single mast placed far forward. It often only carries one main sail. A ketch has two masts. The second mast is a shorter mizzen mast. A schooner also has two masts, but the front one is taller.

Some boats use more than one hull for stability.

These are called multihulls, like catamarans or trimarans. They do not need heavy ballast like monohulls do. Instead, they use a wide, broad stance to stay upright. This makes them very light and fast. Because they are light, they can move very quickly. They can also go into shallow water easily. However, it is hard to fix a multihull if it tips over. A single-hull boat can often recover from a capsize.

Small boats like dinghies are great for learning.

They are open boats used for fun or training. Most sailboats also have a way to move without wind. This is called auxiliary propulsion. Small boats might use a paddle or oars. Larger boats might use an outboard motor on the back. Some even have an engine inside the boat. This helps if the wind stops blowing or if the crew needs to move carefully.
