A motorboat is a craft that moves using an engine.

Unlike sailboats, they do not use wind power. They also do not rely on human power to move. These boats are used for many things like work, sport, or racing. Some boats are built to go very fast. We call these high-speed boats speedboats.

Large motor yachts can even be quite comfortable for traveling.

There are different ways these engines work. An outboard motor is a portable unit. It sits at the stern, which is the back of the boat. This unit holds the engine, the gearbox, and the propeller together. Some engines are inboard, meaning they stay inside the boat. An inboard-outboard, or sterndrive, uses both styles. The engine stays inside, but the propeller is outside.

Most engines use internal combustion to run. This means they burn fuel to create power.

People have been making motorboats for a long time. In 1886, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach tested a petrol engine. They used a small engine in a workshop in a greenhouse. They tested it on the Neckar River. Later, the Priestman Brothers began making boats in large numbers. By 1890, their boats towed goods along canals in England.

Other inventors like Frederick William Lanchester also helped perfect the modern powerboat.

Racing became a big part of boating history. In 1903, the first Harmsworth Cup race was held in Ireland. Dorothy Levitt won this famous race. She drove a Napier motor yacht. She even set a world water speed record.

Later, an American named John L. Hacker changed boat design. He built the Kitty Hawk in 1911. It was a very fast hydroplane. It was the fastest boat in the world at that time.

The shape of the bottom, called the hull, is very important. A V-type hull is shaped like the letter V. This shape helps the boat cut through the water. It also helps the boat stay steady in rough waves.

Boats are made from different materials too. Some are made of wood or plywood. Others use metal like steel or aluminum. Many modern boats use fiberglass. This is a strong material reinforced with balsa wood.
