An inflatable boat is a lightweight vessel designed for easy transport.

These boats use flexible tubes for their sides and bow. These tubes are filled with pressurized gas to keep the shape. Small boats often have soft, flexible floors. Larger boats use three to five rigid sheets made of plywood or aluminum. These sheets stay between the tubes but are not joined rigidly.

Some models include a transom, which is a hard part at the back. This provides a sturdy place to mount an outboard motor.

How these boats work depends on their design. The gas inside the tubes keeps the sides firm. To keep the boat steady cross-ways, many use a removable thwart. A thwart is a bar that holds the boat's shape. Some boats also have an inflatable keel. This is a V-shaped part under the hull. It helps the boat move straight and stay stable in waves.

Modern boats use special fabrics like PVC or polyurethane. These materials are very airtight and strong.

History shows many clever ideas for floating. Long ago, people used animal skins filled with air to cross rivers. In 1838, Charles Goodyear discovered vulcanization. This is a way to make rubber durable and flexible.

In the 1840s, Lieutenant Peter Halkett made boats for Arctic explorers. His boat cloak could turn into a one-man boat when inflated. He even made a two-man boat that fit in a knapsack. Later, the company Zodiac began making inflatable boats in France. They used materials originally made for airships.

Many important events used these boats. During World War II, inflatable boats helped troops land in shallow water.

They were also used to carry cargo and torpedoes. After the war, governments sold extra boats to the public. This helped the civilian industry grow very fast. In 1952, Alain Bombard used an inflatable boat to sail across the Atlantic. The famous diver Jacques-Yves Cousteau also used these boats for his many expeditions.

Today, you can find many types of inflatables. A Soft Inflatable Boat, or SIB, has a flexible floor. These are great for traveling in cars or visiting shallow beaches. A Rigid Inflatable Boat, or RIB, has a solid hull.

A RIB can cut through waves more easily when traveling fast. People use these boats for many fun things. You might see them used for white water rafting or scuba diving. Some even have sails attached to them for traveling on the wind.
