The word yacht comes from a Dutch word. It meant "hunt." Long ago, fast Dutch boats were used to scout for others.

Some yachts use wind to move. These are sailing yachts. Other yachts use engines. Early engines used steam. Later, people made engines that use gas or diesel.

How a yacht is made has changed over time. Old yachts were made of wood. Now, many use fiberglass. Fiberglass is a strong material made from glass fabric and resin.

Very large yachts are called superyachts. These are longer than 24 meters. Some are even bigger.

Moving a yacht can be hard. Small boats use trailers. Big yachts can travel on special ships. Some ships sink low in the water to let yachts float on.

There is no single way to define a yacht. Some rules say they must have a professional crew. Large yachts are often called superyachts. A superyacht is any vessel longer than 24 meters.

Yachts move in different ways. Sailing yachts use the wind to push them along. Power yachts use engines to move through the water. Early power yachts used steam engines. These engines used steam to move pistons inside cylinders. The pistons turned a crankshaft to spin a propeller.

Later, people made engines that use gasoline or diesel. Diesel engines became very popular because they are reliable. They also cost less to run than other engines.

The history of the yacht is very long. The word comes from the Dutch word "jacht." In the Dutch Republic, this word meant "hunt."

These fast boats used to scout for larger ships. In the early 1600s, King James I of England commissioned a yacht for his son. This was one of the first pleasure vessels for royalty. The first recorded yacht race happened in 1661. Later, the famous America's Cup race began.

Long ago, all yachts were made of wood. Builders used wooden ribs and planks to make the shape. Later, people started using iron or steel for steam yachts. In the 1960s, fiberglass became a very common material. Fiberglass is made by soaking glass fabric in resin.

Very large yachts might use steel or aluminum instead. Aluminum is a great choice because it is much lighter than steel.

Small yachts can be pulled on trailers. Large yachts often travel on special ships. Some of these are semi-submersible ships. These ships sink low into the water. This allows the yacht to float right onto a cradle.

Other yachts travel on heavy-lift ships. These ships have their own cranes to move the boats. Some even fit inside standard shipping containers. This makes moving them much easier and cheaper.

Some rules, like the Commercial Yacht Code, classify certain vessels as yachts if they require a professional crew. These boats must meet high construction standards. Large vessels are often called superyachts. A superyacht is generally any yacht longer than 24 meters.

Some yachts are built specifically for racing to prioritize performance over comfort. Others, called charter yachts, are operated as businesses for profit.

The history of the yacht is deeply connected to the Dutch word "jacht," which means "hunt."

In the Dutch Republic, these were light, fast sailing vessels. They were used by the navy and the Dutch East India Company to scout ahead of larger fleets. The tradition of pleasure boating is even older, reaching back to rowed craft in Pharaonic Egypt. By the 8th century, Anglo-Saxon "play ships" featured decorated bows and could even cook food on board. The modern era of sailing yachts began in Europe in the early 1600s. King James I of England commissioned a vessel for his son, Prince Henry of Wales. This marked a shift toward using boats for leisure rather than just war.

Sailing yachts were the primary type of yacht for many centuries. In the 1800s, racing became very popular among wealthy owners. These races often involved large wagers. By the 1850s, yacht designs changed to include large sail areas and deeper drafts. This helped them move through the water more effectively. The famous America's Cup emerged from a contest between the yacht "America" and English competitors. Different countries used different rules to measure these boats. The English used tonnage, while the Americans used length.

The development of new engines created a new category: the power yacht. Early power yachts used steam engines. Some early models even used paddle wheels for movement. Eventually, engineers moved toward screw propellers for better efficiency. In these engines, steam drove pistons inside cylinders. These pistons were connected to a crankshaft, which spun the propeller.

To improve efficiency, engineers developed compound engines. These engines exhausted steam into larger cylinders to handle higher volumes at lower pressures. This process is known as expansion. Double- and triple-expansion engines became common in shipping to save on coal weight. Later, the steam turbine and internal combustion engines began to replace these older piston engines.

Internal combustion engines changed yachting even more. Nicolaus Otto and Gottlieb Daimler developed practical four-stroke gasoline engines in 1876. By 1906, engine horsepower had increased significantly. Diesel power plants were demonstrated in 1903. Diesel engines eventually became the preferred choice for many boaters. They are highly valued because they are reliable and have a low cost of operation. While sailing yachts are steered from the back of the boat, power yachts often use a bridge. This is a forward cabin structure that gives the crew better visibility to the sides and the front.

How a yacht is built depends on its size and purpose.

Originally, all yachts were made of wood using ribs and planks. In the era of steam, builders switched to iron or steel. By the 1960s, fiberglass became a very common material. Fiberglass is made by soaking glass fabric and matting in resin. This is ideal for mass-producing smaller yachts. Larger yachts often use steel or aluminum. Aluminum is much lighter than steel, though both metals can be damaged by electrolysis. Some high-quality wooden yachts use the WEST system. This involves soaking layers of wood strips in epoxy to create a very strong hull.

Moving a large yacht across the ocean is a massive logistical task.

Owners can sail or motor the boat themselves, but this takes a long time. Instead, they often use specialized transport ships. Some are semi-submersible ships that sink low into the water. This allows a yacht to float directly onto a prepared cradle.

Other yachts are carried on heavy-lift ships or multi-purpose vessels. These ships have their own cranes, so they do not need expensive port equipment. Some smaller yachts even travel inside standard shipping containers. This method is flexible and can be less expensive than other ways of moving a boat.
