Many different groups lived on Sicily in the past. Long ago, Greeks and Carthaginians fought for control. The island was also part of the Roman Empire. Later, many other groups ruled the land. These included the Byzantines and the Normans. In 1860, Sicily became part of the new country of Italy. Today, it is a special part of Italy with its own local rules.
