Råbjerg Mile is a huge hill of sand in Denmark. It is a migrating dune. This means the sand is always moving. It is the largest moving dune in Northern Europe. The dune holds 4 million cubic meters of sand. It is located between Skagen and Frederikshavn. More than 250,000 people visit this place every year.

The wind is what makes the dune move. It pushes the sand in a north-easterly direction. This happens every single year. As the dune moves, it leaves something behind. It leaves a low and moist layer of sand. This trail of wet sand goes west towards the Skagerrak. The dune originally formed there more than 300 years ago.

Long ago, moving sand caused many problems for people. In the 16th and 17th centuries, dunes moved deep into the land. They pushed people away from the coast. One famous building was a large church. It was built in the late 14th century. It was dedicated to Saint Lawrence of Rome. By the 18th century, sand covered almost everything.

By 1795, the sand took over the whole church. People had to abandon it. The main building was torn down. Now, only the church tower remains. You can still see it above the sand. In 1857, the government passed the Sand Drift Act. This helped the state buy areas of sand drift. They planted grasses and trees to stop the sand.

Today, the Råbjerg Mile is a special place for nature. Most dunes were stopped by planting trees. But leaders left this dune to move. They want people to see how it works. The state bought the central area in 1900. The dune is now drifting out of that area. Many birds use the land to rest or nest. You might see a wood sandpiper or a golden plover here.
