Different groups like the Picts, Gaels, and Vikings lived on the island. For a long time, Norway held control over the land. This changed in 1266 with the Treaty of Perth. Later, the clan system broke up during the 18th-century Jacobite risings. These changes caused many people to leave their homes for distant lands.
