These islands sit off the west coast of the mainland. They are part of a larger chain called the Hebrides. This chain includes the Outer Hebrides to the northwest. The Inner Hebrides consist of 35 islands where people live. There are also 44 other islands that have no people on them.

Together, these islands cover a large area of the sea. They are part of a mild oceanic climate. This means the weather is shaped by the Atlantic Ocean.

The islands look very different depending on where you go. Some islands like Skye and Mull have huge mountains.

Much of the coastline is covered in machair. Machair is a type of fertile, low-lying grassland near the sea. The weather can be quite wet and windy. Winds can even reach speeds of 128 km/h. However, Tiree is known as one of the sunniest places in Scotland.

People have lived on these islands for a very long time. Some of the oldest evidence comes from a flint arrowhead found on Islay. This tool is dated to 10,800 BC.

In the past, different groups of people ruled the islands. The Picts lived in the north, while the Gaels lived in the south. Later, the Norse people ruled the islands for over 400 years. They stayed until the Treaty of Perth in 1266. After that, many famous Scottish clans like the MacDonalds held control.

Today, many people work in specific jobs to support the islands. Many people work in fishing or small-scale farming called crofting.

Another big job is making whisky in places like Islay and Mull. Tourism is also a main way people earn money. Because the islands are separated by water, sea travel is very important. Ferries are the main way to move between the islands and the mainland. In 2011, the total population of the islands was 18,948 people.

The beautiful landscapes have even inspired many different artists. Some parts of the islands are very quiet and remote. Other places, like the town of Tobermory, are more crowded.
