It is the main island of the Outer Hebrides. This island group sits near the Scottish mainland. It is the third largest island in the British Isles. Only Great Britain and Ireland are larger. The island is about 1% the size of Great Britain. Even though it has two names, it is a single island. Mountains divide the land into two distinct parts.

The northern two-thirds of the island is called Lewis. The southern third is called Harris. There are many cultural and linguistic differences between them. A boundary line runs between the two sections. This line starts at Loch Resort in the west. It then travels east to Loch Seaforth. The path goes through several high mountain peaks. One road, the A859, connects the two sides.

People have lived on this land for a very long time. Some settlements likely began around 6000 BC. The Callanish Stones were built about 5,000 years ago. In the 9th century, Norsemen lived on the island. Later, the Nicholson family built Castle Lewis in the 13th century. In 1844, Sir James Matheson bought the island. He built Lews Castle between 1847 and 1857. Many famous items, like the Lewis chessmen, were found here.

Harris is a very hilly place to visit. It has more than thirty peaks above 500 metres. The highest peak is named Clisham. Lewis is much flatter than Harris. It holds the deepest lake on any offshore island in the British Isles. This lake is called Loch Suaineabhat. It reaches a maximum depth of 60 metres. Stornoway is the main town and has many residents. In 2022, the island had 19,680 people living there.

Many people work in special jobs on the island. Tourism is a very important industry for the area. Visitors come to see beaches like Luskentyre. People also come to see the old Callanish Stones. Another famous job is making Harris Tweed. This is a special cloth made by hand at home. It is the only handwoven tweed made this way in the world. Other people work in fishing or on small farms called crofts.
