This island is a very active volcanic center. It is part of a long volcanic arc in the South Aegean. Volcanic activity first began in this area about 3 to 4 million years ago. On the island of Thera, volcanoes began to form about 2 million years ago. These volcanoes released lava from vents near a place called Akrotiri. About 3,600 years ago, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history happened here.

The ash from the volcano buried the town and kept it safe. Because of this, researchers found beautiful wall paintings called frescoes. These paintings show scenes of people and animals.
