The island has a very special climate. Some parts are hot and dry. However, the inland areas are much cooler and wetter in the winter. This happens because the island has high ground.

Mt. Zas is the highest peak in the Cyclades. This mountain helps trap clouds to bring much-needed rain.

Because of the rain, Naxos is a very fertile place. It is the most fertile island in the Cyclades. This makes farming a very important job for the people there. They grow many kinds of fruits and vegetables. They also raise cattle on the land. The island is famous for its honey made from thyme nectar. People also make a special cheese called Arseniko Naxou.

Naxos has a very long and interesting history.

Very old tools and jewelry were found in the Zas cave. These items show that people lived there a long time ago. In the Bronze Age, the island was a major center. During the Classical era, it was a very wealthy place. Ancient writers even said it was the most prosperous Greek island.
