It holds the distinction of being the largest island in this specific archipelago. The island's administrative center and largest town is Chora, also known as Naxos City. According to the 2021 census, Chora houses 8,897 inhabitants out of a total island population of 20,578. Beyond the capital, the island features several main villages such as Filoti, Apiranthos, Vivlos, Agios Arsenios, Koronos, and Glynado. The geography of the island is diverse, ranging from coastal areas to high mountainous terrain.

The island's physical environment dictates much of its local climate and economy. Naxos experiences a Mediterranean climate (Csa) and a hot semi-arid climate (BSh) depending on the specific location.

The inland regions are notably wetter and cooler during the winter months. This variation occurs because of the island's higher elevation. Mount Zeus is the highest peak in the entire Cyclades group. This mountain acts as a barrier that traps clouds, allowing for greater rainfall. This natural mechanism makes Naxos the most fertile island in the Cyclades. Consequently, agriculture is a vital economic sector involving fruit, vegetables, and cattle breeding.

Naxos has been a center of human activity since prehistoric times. Archaeological evidence from the Middle Paleolithic era includes Mousterian tools found at the Stelida quarry. These finds suggest Neanderthal activity on the island spanned nearly 200,000 years. During the Neolithic era, the Zas cave served as a habitation site. Researchers discovered stone objects from Melos, copper daggers, and gold sheets within the cave. Such items indicate that the inhabitants held a high social status. During the Bronze Age, the island was a major hub for the Cycladic culture. The island was also a vital source of emery, a rock rich in corundum used as an abrasive.

Greek mythology provides many stories that link the island to the divine. Legend states that the young god Zeus was raised in a cave on Mt. Zas.

Other myths involve the hero Theseus and Ariadne, who was reportedly abandoned on the island. The god Dionysus is also considered a protector of Naxos. Additionally, the sea god Poseidon is said to have seen the nereid Amphitrite dancing near the island. These myths reflect the deep cultural significance the island held for ancient peoples. Such stories have even inspired famous works like the opera *Ariadne auf Naxos* by Richard Strauss.

In the Classical era, Naxos was a dominant force in Cycladic commerce. The historian Herodotus described Naxos as the most prosperous Greek island around 500 BCE. However, the island faced political challenges during the Greco-Persian Wars. In 499 BCE, an unsuccessful Persian attack on Naxos helped trigger the Ionian Revolt. Later, around 469 BCE, Naxos attempted to leave the Delian League. This move was quickly stopped by Athens, which then demanded payments in gold instead of military aid. These events highlight the island's strategic and economic importance in antiquity.

The Byzantine and Frankish periods brought significant political shifts to the island. During the Byzantine era, Naxos was part of the province of the Islands and later the thema of the Aegean Sea.

Following the Fourth Crusade, the Venetian Marco Sanudo conquered the island between 1205 and 1207. He established the Duchy of Naxos, also called the Duchy of the Archipelago. This realm was ruled by twenty-one dukes across two dynasties until 1566.

While the Sanudi introduced Western feudal law, the native Greek population continued using Byzantine law for civil matters. The island also faced various raids from Turkish beyliks and Saracens during these centuries.

The Ottoman Empire eventually exerted control over the island. In 1566, Sultan Selim II deposed the last Latin Christian duke, Giacomo IV Crispo. The Ottomans then appointed Joseph Nasi as the Duke of Naxos.

Although the Ottomans held authority, very few Turks actually settled on the island. Ottoman rule lasted until 1821, when Naxos joined the Greek War of Independence. The island eventually became part of the fully independent Greek state in 1830. Today, Naxos remains a major destination for tourism, famous for its beaches and ancient ruins.
