It sits southeast of the Greek mainland within the Cyclades island group. The island is the largest part of a circular archipelago. This archipelago is formed by the Santorini caldera, which is a large, water-filled crater.

As of the 2021 census, the population is 15,480 people.

The island is a highly active volcanic center. It sits on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc. This arc is a long, wide chain of volcanic activity. Volcanism in this region first began around 3 to 4 million years ago. On the island of Thera, activity began about 2 million years ago. This involved the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents near Akrotiri. Dacitic lava is a specific type of volcanic rock.

A massive event occurred about 3,600 years ago. This was the Minoan eruption, or the Thera eruption. It happened during the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption lasted for several weeks. It produced massive tsunami waves and left deep layers of volcanic ash.

Some people suggest this eruption inspired the legend of Atlantis. This lost civilization is a famous myth from antiquity. The eruption also serves as a fixed point for dating history. Archaeologists use it to organize the chronology of the second millennium BC.

Archaeologists have found incredible things at the Akrotiri site. Excavations began in 1967 under Spyridon Marinatos. The site is the best-known Minoan location outside of Crete. The volcanic ash entombed a large town, preserving its structures. Researchers found multi-level buildings and streets. Some walls stand as high as eight metres.

The people of Akrotiri lived in a sophisticated society. They had a complex community with organized textile weaving. They even used a highly developed drainage system. This system used pipes for both hot and cold water. The hot water likely came from geothermal sources. Geothermal energy is heat from inside the Earth.

The town was a major Bronze Age port. It traded with places like Egypt, Cyprus, and Syria. Some houses were as tall as three storeys. These ruins are often compared to Pompeii in Italy.

The island has carried many different names throughout history. In antiquity, it was known as Thera. Ancient writers also called it Kalliste, meaning "the most beautiful one."

Modern tradition sometimes calls it Strongyle, meaning "the circular one." The name Santorini is a contraction of Saint Irene. This refers to an old church in Perissa. The name has been used since at least the twelfth century. The geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi first mentioned it as "Santurin."

History on the island continued through many different eras. The Dorians founded a city on Mesa Vouno in the ninth century BC. This site is known today as Ancient Thera.

Later, the island was a naval base for Ptolemaic Egypt. During the Byzantine period, a volcano erupted again in 727. This explosion was described as a vapour like fire. It was seen as a divine omen. The island has since seen many rulers, including Romans and Ottomans.
