Madeira Island

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Madeira is a large island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a part of the Madeira Archipelago. This island is the largest and most crowded in that group. As of 2021, it had a population of 245,595 people. The island sits on top of a huge volcano. This volcano rises from deep under the ocean floor. It is a massive submerged shield volcano.

The island was built by volcanic activity over a long time. It began during the Miocene epoch over five million years ago. This activity happened along a rift in the African Plate. The volcano continued to grow until about 700,000 years ago. Later, erosion changed the shape of the land. This created two large amphitheatres in the center. These are large, bowl-shaped areas that open to the south.

More volcanic activity happened after the first big changes. New lava flows and scoria cones formed on top of the old land. The most recent eruptions happened in the west-central part. These eruptions occurred only 6,500 years ago. This activity created more cinder cones and lava flows. An island with reefs was even formed during this phase. You can still see traces of this in the Lameiros area.

Madeira has many different shapes and sizes. It is 57 km long from Ponta de São Lourenço to Ponta do Pargo. At its widest point, it is about 41 km across. The island has a coastline of 140 km. A mountain ridge runs through the center of the island. The highest point is Pico Ruivo. Other peaks include Torres, Arieiro, Cidrão, Cedro, Casado, Grande, and Ferreiro.

Life on the island is shaped by the land. Steep sea cliffs like Cabo Girão are very high. Deep valleys and ravines also come from the central mountains. These features make the middle of the island hard to reach. Heavy rains fall during the autumn and winter. This water travels down the ravines to the sea. Because of this, most people live in villages at the mouths of the ravines.
