Macaronesia is a special group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean.

These islands sit near the coasts of Europe and North Africa. The group is made of four main archipelagos. These are the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Cape Verde. Each archipelago is its own political group. The Azores and Madeira belong to Portugal. The Canary Islands are part of Spain. Cape Verde is a sovereign state and a member of the United Nations.

These islands were born from volcanic activity. They grew from seamounts on the ocean floor. These are underwater mountains that rose above the surface. Most of Macaronesia sits on the African tectonic plate. However, the Azores sit in a triple junction. This is a spot where the Eurasian, African, and North American plates meet.

Because the islands have different heights and locations, the weather changes a lot. The Azores have oceanic and humid climates. Madeira has a tropical savanna climate. The Canary Islands can be desert or semi-desert. Cape Verde has a tropical climate.

The name Macaronesia comes from ancient Greek words. It means "islands of the fortunate." Ancient geographers used this name for islands west of the Strait of Gibraltar. The term was not used for a long time. Then, people brought it back in 1917. This is the meaning we use today. Some people sometimes misspell it as "Macronesia." They do this because it sounds like Micronesia. But Micronesia is a different group of islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The islands have a unique way of life for plants and animals. Since these islands were never part of a continent, life arrived by traveling long distances. Many living things there are endemic. This means they are found nowhere else on Earth. One example is the jumping spider genus called Macaroeris.

Some islands have laurisilva forests. These are mountain cloud forests. They look like ancient forests from a long time ago. These forests once covered much of the Mediterranean Basin.

Today, many of these special species face hard jobs. Human activity has changed the land. People have cut forests for timber and firewood. They also cleared land for farming or grazing. New plants and animals were brought to the islands too. Even domestic cats can be a big problem for local birds and reptiles. To help, the European Union protects large areas of land and sea. In the Azores, Madeira, and the Canaries, this covers 500,000 square kilometers.

In 2022, about 3,222,054 people lived in Macaronesia.
