Macaronesia is a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean.

They sit near the coasts of Africa and Europe. This group has four main parts. These are the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Cape Verde.

These islands were made by volcanoes. They grew from mountains on the ocean floor.

Because they are in different spots, the weather changes. Some islands are hot and dry like a desert. Others are cool and wet.

Many special plants and animals live there. They reached the islands by traveling long distances. Some islands have thick cloud forests. We call these laurisilva forests.

These forests look like very old forests from long ago.

Today, some of these plants and animals are in danger. People have cut down trees for wood. They also brought new plants and animals to the islands. Even stray cats can be a threat to the local birds and reptiles. Laws now help protect large parts of the land and sea.
