Madeira Island

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Madeira is a large island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of a group of islands. It is the biggest island in that group. About 245,595 people live there.

This island was made by a huge volcano. The volcano rose from the deep ocean floor. It began to form over five million years ago. Long ago, the volcano changed the land. It made two large, open spaces in the center. Later, more lava flowed over the old land. The last eruptions happened 6,500 years ago.

A long ridge of mountains runs through the middle. The highest peak is called Pico Ruivo. Other high peaks include Torres and Arieiro. Steep cliffs and deep valleys also sit on the island. These cliffs make the middle of the island hard to reach.

Heavy rain falls during the autumn and winter. The water flows down through deep ravines. These paths lead from the hills to the sea. Most people live in villages near these paths. They live where the ravines meet the coast.
