Some legends say even older travelers visited them. Portuguese sailors claimed the islands in 1419.

Two captains named João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira were part of this journey. They were working for Prince Henry the Navigator. They were blown off course by a storm. They named one harbor in thanks for their safety. Settlers began to live on the islands around 1420. They hoped for a better life than they had in Portugal.

Life on the islands changed many times. At first, settlers grew wheat to eat.

Later, they started growing sugar cane. This became a huge part of their economy. They used water-driven mills to make sugar. By the 17th century, the islands became famous for wine instead.
