However, the capital city, Tórshavn, gets very little sun. It has only 840 hours of sunshine each year. This is the lowest amount for any city in the world.

The islands have a very long and interesting history.

Some studies show people lived there even before the Vikings. They found traces of barley and sheep from many centuries ago.

Norse settlers arrived in the early 9th century. Many of these people came from Norway. Others were Norse-Gaels from places like Scotland and Ireland.

These settlers brought sheep and birds to the islands. The islands were later ruled by Norway. Then, they came under Danish rule in 1523. For a long time, the Faroese language was not used for writing.

It took many years for the language to become official again.

Today, the islands have a special way of running things.

They have a parliament called the Løgting. This may be one of the oldest parliaments still running. The Faroe Islands have a lot of autonomy. This means they can make many of their own rules. They control most things in their own land. They do not control military defence or the police.

They also have their own trade rules. They even have a special trade agreement with Iceland. This is called the Hoyvík Agreement. Because of this, they are not part of the European Union. They also keep control over their own fishing waters.

Life on the islands is closely tied to the sea.

The fishing industry is very important for the people. About 90% of everything they sell comes from fishing.

Since the 2010s, more people have started visiting for tourism. The islands are also home to many animals. You might see Atlantic puffins flying near the cliffs.

You will also see many sheep grazing on the hills.

The islands are a place where nature is very strong. The landscape stays wild and beautiful for everyone to see.

The name of the islands tells a story about the land.

The name comes from Old Norse words. Many people think it means "Sheep Islands."

This is because there are so many sheep there. Some people think the name might come from Irish words instead. This is because of the early people who lived there. The Faroese language is still very important today. It is spoken by the people living on the islands.
