The island sits between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. It is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

This means people from Greenland are also citizens of Denmark. They are also citizens of the European Union. However, Greenland itself is not part of the EU. The island is a very important part of North America. It even shares a tiny border with Canada on Hans Island.

Life in Greenland is shaped by its environment. Most people live along the southwest coast. This is because the climate and land are better there. The rest of the huge island is very empty. In 2022, only 56,583 people lived there. This makes it the least crowded place on Earth.

Many people in Greenland are Inuit. Most of them belong to the Kalaallit group. They live mainly in the western part of the island. The capital city and largest city is Nuuk.

The history of the island is very long. People have lived there for at least 4,500 years. Early groups like the Saqqaq and Dorset cultures lived there. Later, the Thule people arrived from Alaska around 1300.

In the 10th century, Norsemen from Norway arrived too. A man named Erik the Red led them. He named the land Greenland to attract settlers. He thought a nice name would help people move there. The Norse settlements eventually disappeared in the 15th century. Some think the weather became too cold during this time.

Greenland has changed many times over the years. It was once linked to the kingdom of Norway. In 1814, it was moved to the Danish crown. In 1953, it stopped being a colony.

Later, Greenland gained more power to rule itself. In 1979, they received home rule. In 2008, they voted for self-government. This gave the local Naalakkersuisut government more control. However, Denmark still manages money and foreign affairs. This balance of power helps the island run its own services.

Today, Greenland is a very modern place. It is known for being socially progressive. Education and healthcare are free for the people.

They also use a lot of clean energy. About 67 percent of their electricity comes from hydropower.

This energy comes from moving water. The island is also important because of its minerals. As ice melts, these resources become easier to reach. This makes Greenland a key place for many different countries.
