Greenland is a very special place to see.
Greenland is the largest island in the world.

Many people in Greenland are Inuit. Their ancestors, the Thule, moved from Alaska long ago. Other people, called Norsemen, lived there too. They came from Norway in the 10th century. A man named Erik the Red gave the island its name. He hoped the name "Greenland" would attract new settlers.
Today, the capital city is Nuuk. Greenland has its own government. However, Denmark still handles things like money and safety. Much of the power for electricity comes from water. This is called hydropower.
Greenland is a massive and fascinating place. It is the largest island in the whole world.

Life in Greenland is shaped by its environment. Most people live along the southwest coast. This is because the climate and land are better there. The rest of the huge island is very empty. In 2022, only 56,583 people lived there. This makes it the least crowded place on Earth.
The history of the island is very long. People have lived there for at least 4,500 years. Early groups like the Saqqaq and Dorset cultures lived there. Later, the Thule people arrived from Alaska around 1300.
Greenland has changed many times over the years. It was once linked to the kingdom of Norway. In 1814, it was moved to the Danish crown. In 1953, it stopped being a colony.
Today, Greenland is a very modern place. It is known for being socially progressive. Education and healthcare are free for the people.
Greenland is the world's largest island. It is located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.

The island's history involves many different groups of people. For at least 4,500 years, circumpolar peoples have lived there. These ancestors migrated from what is now Canada. One early group was the Saqqaq culture. They lived in southern and western Greenland from 2500 BC to 800 BC.
Norsemen also arrived in Greenland during the 10th century. A man named Erik the Red led 14 boats from Iceland. He settled the southern part of the island. He named the land Greenland to attract new settlers. He believed a favorable name would help people move there. The Norse established three settlements: the Eastern, Western, and Middle Settlements. These people lived in Greenland for about 400 years. However, they disappeared by the late 15th century.
Greenland's political status has changed through many stages. From 986 until the early 15th century, it was associated with Norway. In 1814, Greenland was transferred to the Danish crown. In 1953, the Danish Constitution ended its status as a colony. This integrated Greenland fully into the Danish state. Later, Greenland gained more control through referendums. In 1979, Denmark granted home rule to the territory. In 2008, the Self-Government Act was passed. This transferred more power to the local Naalakkersuisut, which is the Greenlandic government. Denmark still manages foreign affairs, security, and monetary policy.
The population of Greenland is 56,583 as of 2022. Most residents are Inuit. The population is mostly concentrated on the southwest coast. This is due to geography and climate. Because of this, Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world.
Greenland has a unique economy and energy system. The territory relies heavily on aid from Denmark. Between 2019 and 2023, this aid averaged more than 20% of Greenland's gross domestic product. The island also has significant mineral wealth. As global warming causes ice to melt, these resources are becoming more accessible. This makes Greenland strategically important. It sits between the Arctic zone, North America, and Eurasia. This location is important for the European Union, NATO, and Denmark.
Today, Greenland remains a place of global interest. Its strategic position makes it a key area for international politics. Since 2025, the United States has pursued threats to annex the territory. This has triggered what is known as the Greenland crisis. The island's environment is also changing rapidly. The melting ice affects both the local way of life and global systems. Despite these shifts, the Greenlandic people continue to manage their own local services. They balance their unique culture with their connections to the wider world.
