People have lived in this area for a very long time. The Saqqaq culture lived near the site around 2200 BCE. Later, the Dorset culture and Norse settlers also stayed there. The city we know today was founded in 1728. A man named Hans Egede moved a colony here. He called the place Godt-Haab, which means "good hope."

Today, Nuuk is a mix of many different cultures. Both Inuit and Danes live in the city. It serves as the main center for the Greenlandic government. The parliament, called the Inatsisartut, meets here to make laws. You can find many shops selling local art and crafts. The city even has its own shopping center. The city is located on Greenland's southwestern coast. It sits at the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord. This fjord flows toward the Labrador Sea. The water splits into three distinct arms in its lower section. Three large islands sit between these arms: Sermitsiaq Island, Qeqertarsuaq Island, and Qoornuup Qeqertarsua. To the northeast, the massive Sermitsiaq mountain rises to 2,170 meters. This peak is visible from almost anywhere in the city. Other nearby peaks include Store Malene, 715 meters, and Lille Malene, 515 meters.

Nuuk experiences a maritime-influenced tundra climate. This means the city has long, cold, and snowy winters. The summers are short and remain quite cold. The average monthly temperature in July is 7°C. Trees struggle to grow here because the warmest month is often below 10°C. The sun's behavior changes drastically with the seasons. On December 21, the shortest day, the sun rises at 11:22 am and sets at 3:28 pm. On June 21, the longest day, the sun sets at 1:03 am. This creates a period of constant civil twilight during the summer months.

Human habitation in this region spans thousands of years. The Saqqaq culture lived near the site around 2200 BCE. Later, the Dorset culture occupied the area until they disappeared before 1000 AD. Norse settlers also lived there from approximately 1000 until the 15th century. The modern city was founded in 1728 by Hans Egede. He was a Danish-Norwegian missionary who moved from the Hope Colony. The royal governor Claus Paarss helped relocate the settlement to the mainland. They originally named the fort Godt-Haab, which means "good hope."

During the colonial period, the city underwent significant changes. In 1747, the establishment of the New Herrnhut mission became a nucleus for the area. Many Greenlanders moved from the southeastern coast to live at this mission station. In 1861, Hinrich Johannes Rink started the Atuagagdliutit, the first Greenlandic newspaper. This publication became a vital symbol of Greenlandic identity. In 1979, Greenland established home rule. This allowed local authorities to rename the city from Godthåb to Nuuk. This change helped prioritize Greenlandic names over Danish ones.

The economy of Nuuk is diverse and growing. While it began as a small fishing settlement, it has expanded into trade and shipping. Nuuk is home to almost half of Greenland's entire fishing fleet. The local Royal Greenland processing plant handles massive amounts of seafood. It processes over DKK 50 million in seafood annually. Most of this is shrimp, though they also process cod, lumpfish, and halibut.

The city provides essential services through Queen Ingrid's Hospital and the Queen Ingrid's Health Center. Energy for the city comes from the Buksefjord hydroelectric power plant. The electricity travels across the Ameralik fjord via a 132 kV powerline. This is the world's longest free span for a powerline. Modern transport is supported by the Nuuk Airport. The city remains a vital connection point for the entire territory.
