The Danish Realm is a special group of three different lands.

It is officially called the Kingdom of Denmark. This realm is a sovereign state, which means it is an independent country. It is not a federation like some other nations. Instead, it is a collection of territories united under one monarch. These territories include Denmark in Europe, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. Each part has its own legal system and way of governing. They are all joined together by a single document called the Constitutional Act.

Each part of the realm is very different from the others. Denmark is located in Northern Europe and has flat, farmable land. Most of the people live here, with over six million residents.

The Faroe Islands sit in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are rugged places with many cliffs along the coast. About 52,000 people live in the Faroe Islands, where the language is Faroese. Greenland is the largest part by far. It makes up 98% of the total area of the realm. It is mostly covered in ice and is very sparsely populated.

History shows how these lands became connected over many years. The Faroe Islands were settled by Norwegian Vikings in the 9th century. Greenland was later settled by Norse people, including Erik the Red. The connection to Greenland was lost for a while in the 1400s. Later, Denmark and Norway rebuilt those connections in 1721. In 1814, Denmark kept control of the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

The islands have had their own unique cultures for a long time. This history is why they have so much power to rule themselves today.

Today, the three parts share power through a system called autonomy. This means they can make many of their own local decisions. The Faroe Islands gained home rule in 1948 after a vote.

Greenland gained home rule in 1979. In 2009, Greenland moved to a system called self-rule. This gives them even more control over their own internal affairs. The Danish government in Copenhagen has very little influence over these local matters now. However, the Parliament of the Kingdom of Denmark still handles some big tasks. This includes the Supreme Court and the main government.

Learning about the Danish Realm helps us see how different lands can stay together. Even though they are far apart in the ocean, they are united. They share a monarch and a constitution.

The realm is quite large because of Greenland. In fact, Greenland alone is the twelfth-largest country in the world. The whole realm is spread across the North Atlantic and the North Sea. It is a great example of how different cultures can live under one shared identity.
