The Nordic Council is a special group that helps several countries work together.

It is a place where leaders talk and make plans for their region. This group includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. It also includes three self-governing areas: the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland. These areas have the same amount of representation as the full countries. The Council helps these neighbors cooperate on many different things. It is a very important part of how life works in Northern Europe.

Working together happens through meetings and shared rules. The Council has 87 representatives who are elected by their own parliaments. They hold a main meeting every autumn to discuss important topics. They also hold a special theme session in the spring. The Council does not have its own power to make laws. Instead, each country must take the Council's decisions and pass them through their own national government. This way, the ideas from the Council become real rules for everyone to follow.

This cooperation began after a very difficult time in history. During World War II, many of these lands faced hard times. After the war, the countries tried to create a plan for mutual defense. This plan did not work because some countries joined NATO instead. In 1951, Danish Prime Minister Hans Hedtoft suggested a different way to talk. He proposed a group where leaders could consult with one another. This led to the first agreement in March 1952.

Since its start, the Council has achieved many big goals. In 1954, they created a shared labor market for workers. In 1958, they started the Nordic Passport Union so people could travel easily.

The Council also helps protect the environment in the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic. In 1971, they set up the Council of Ministers to help with government work. They even created a Nordic Investment Bank to help with money matters. These steps helped make the region a very connected place to live.

Language is a big part of how these people connect. The Council uses five official languages: Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish.

Many people in the region speak languages that are very similar. For example, people who speak Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish can often understand each other well. Because of a special agreement, citizens can use their own native language when visiting official offices in another Nordic country. This makes it much easier for people to go to hospitals or police stations in a new land. It helps everyone feel at home across the whole region.
