The European Economic Community, or EEC, was a way for countries to work together. It was created to help the economy of Europe grow. This group wanted to make a common market for its members.

This meant countries could trade more easily with each other. It was also known as the European Common Market. Some people called it the European Community even before its official name change. The goal was to bring different nations closer through shared economic rules.

Building this community took many careful steps. First, leaders wanted to prevent future wars by connecting their economies.

They started with the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. Later, the Treaty of Rome was signed on March 25, 1957. This treaty officially started the EEC. This group worked alongside others like EURATOM, which focused on nuclear energy. By 1967, these groups joined together to become the European Communities. They worked to set fair prices for farm products by 1962.

History shows that making these choices was not always easy.

Some leaders had different ideas about how much power to share. For example, French President Charles de Gaulle often disagreed with certain rules. He once used an "empty chair policy" to show his protest. This happened in 1965 during a disagreement about how to make decisions. Eventually, leaders reached a compromise in 1966 called the Luxembourg compromise. This allowed members to protect their own national interests.

Many countries wanted to join the growing group over the years.

Denmark, Ireland, and the United Kingdom joined in 1973. Greece became a member in 1981 after its democracy was restored. Spain and Portugal also joined in 1986.

In 1979, people could finally vote directly for the European Parliament. This made the Parliament much more active in making decisions. The group also adopted a special flag with twelve gold stars.

Today, the EEC has changed into something even bigger. In 1993, the Maastricht Treaty changed the name to the European Community. This was because the group did much more than just trade.

It created a single market where goods and people move freely. Finally, in 2009, the Treaty of Lisbon was signed. This treaty moved everything into the European Union. The old institutions were absorbed to help the Union work today.
