The East African Community, or EAC, is a group of nations working together. This organization helps countries in East Africa join their economies. They want to make it easier to trade goods and move workers. This process is called regional economic integration.

By working as a team, these countries hope to grow stronger. They want to create a huge market for many people. The group is a key part of the larger African Economic Community.

To make this work, the EAC uses several special tools. They created a common market for goods, labor, and capital in 2010. This allows things to move more freely between member lands. The members also signed a plan in 2013 to start a monetary union. This means they hope to use the same money one day. They even want to build a full political federation. This future state would have its capital in Arusha, Tanzania.

The history of this group has had ups and downs. Cooperation between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania began in the early 20th century. They shared a common currency from 1919 until 1966. The first EAC was founded in 1967 to help these lands grow. However, the group collapsed in 1977 due to many disagreements. Leaders had different political ideas and different economic systems. After many years, the EAC was revived on 7 July 2000.

Today, the EAC has grown to include eight different states. The original members included Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. South Sudan joined the group in September 2016. The Democratic Republic of the Congo became a member in July 2022. This addition gave the group its first port on the West African coast. Somalia is the newest member, joining in March 2024.

This group shows how neighbors can build a shared future. Even when things were difficult in the past, they kept trying. They have worked to connect things like rail links and oil pipelines. These connections help different countries rely on each other. Some leaders even talk about making a single sovereign state. This would be a very big change for the whole region. It all starts with countries deciding to work together.
