The Eurasian Economic Union, often called the EAEU, is a group of five countries.

These nations are located in the large area of Eurasia. They work together to create a single market for their people. This means goods and services can move easily across their borders. As of 2023, the union includes about 183 million people. The total value of what these countries produce is over $2.4 trillion.

This group helps its members stay connected through shared rules.

To make this union work, the countries follow many common rules. They use common policies for things like transport and industry. They also work together on agriculture, energy, and foreign trade.

The union also manages customs and competition rules. This helps ensure that businesses play by the same set of laws. They even hope to use a single currency in the future. This would make trading between the five countries even simpler.

This union grew from a long history of change.

Many of these countries were once part of the Soviet Union. When that union ended in 1991, the new independent states faced hard economic times. Leaders looked for ways to fix their economies through trade. In 1994, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first president of Kazakhstan, proposed a new idea. He suggested a Eurasian Union to connect with Europe and East Asia. He wanted to make it easier for goods to flow across the region.

The formal EAEU began with a major treaty signed in 2014.

On May 29, 2014, leaders from Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia signed the document. The treaty officially started working on January 1, 2015. Armenia joined the union on January 2, 2015. Kyrgyzstan also joined later, with its treaty starting on August 6, 2015. These five nations now form the core of the economic group. They use this union to grow their wealth together.

Several special groups help run the EAEU every day.

The Supreme Eurasian Economic Council is the highest group. It is made up of the leaders from each member state. There is also an intergovernmental council for heads of government. The Eurasian Economic Commission does the daily work for the union. Finally, the Court of the Eurasian Economic Union handles legal matters. These groups help the five countries stay organized and follow their shared goals.
