The Eurasian Economic Union, known as the EAEU or EEU, is an economic union.

It consists of five post-Soviet states located in Eurasia. These nations work together to maintain an integrated single market. This system allows for the free movement of goods and services between members. As of 2023, the union represents 183 million people. The combined gross domestic product of these nations exceeds $2.4 trillion.

The union aims to boost economic efficiency through shared cooperation.

The EAEU functions through several different levels of governance. The Supreme Eurasian Economic Council serves as the highest authority. This body is composed of the Heads of State from each member country. Below this is the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council. This group consists of the heads of the governments of the member states. The day-to-day operations are managed by the Eurasian Economic Commission. This is the executive body of the union. Finally, the Court of the Eurasian Economic Union acts as the judicial body.

To keep the single market running, the union follows common policies. These policies cover many different sectors of the economy. Members coordinate on transport, industry, and agriculture. They also work together on energy and foreign trade. The union manages customs and technical regulation across its borders. It also oversees competition and antitrust regulation. These rules ensure that markets function fairly for all participants. Looking ahead, the members envision using a single currency. This would create even greater economic integration among the states.

The history of this union is tied to the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the 1977 Soviet Constitution, Union Republics were sovereign states. However, their sovereignty was limited by their membership in the larger Union. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, many republics faced economic decline. The presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia signed the Belavezha Accords on December 8, 1991. This agreement declared the Soviet Union would cease to exist. It established the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in its place.

This began a long process of searching for new ways to integrate.

Integration efforts continued through various agreements in the 1990s. In 1993, several states signed a treaty to create an Economic Union. This was intended to build a free trade area and a customs union. In 1994, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first president of Kazakhstan, proposed a new vision. He suggested a Eurasian Union of States that was separate from the CIS.

He wanted a regional trade bloc to connect with Europe and East Asia. This proposal focused on simplifying the flow of goods across the vast Eurasian landmass.

The modern EAEU was officially formed through a specific treaty. On May 29, 2014, leaders from Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia signed the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union.

This treaty officially came into force on January 1, 2015. Other nations joined shortly after this date. Armenia's accession treaty became effective on January 2, 2015. Kyrgyzstan's treaty came into effect on August 6, 2015. Kyrgyzstan had participated in the process as an acceding state from the start. These five nations now form the core of the organization.

The EAEU is part of a broader history of regional cooperation. Many post-Soviet countries moved toward market economies and global trade. Some countries, like Georgia, were involved in earlier agreements but later withdrew. Other groups, like the Euroasian Coal and Metal Community, were also established and later terminated. The EAEU represents a more permanent structure for economic connection. It seeks to use the shared legal heritage and infrastructure of the region. By working together, these five states aim to increase their economic strength in a changing world.
