Mercosur is a major South American trade bloc. It is known as the Southern Common Market. People call it Mercosur in Spanish and Mercosul in Portuguese.

This organization helps countries work together through trade. It allows for the free movement of goods, people, and money. By working as a single unit, these nations can grow their economies. This group is a vital part of the global economic system.

The bloc operates primarily as a customs union. This means member nations follow shared trade rules. They use a common external tariff on imports from outside the group. This tariff is a tax applied to goods coming from non-member countries.

Within the bloc, trade is free between members. This eliminates customs duties and other trade restrictions. The group also coordinates important national policies. These include fiscal, monetary, and agricultural policies. Such coordination helps ensure fair competition among all members.

Mercosur has several distinct types of membership. The full members are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Venezuela is also a full member. However, Venezuela has been suspended since December 1, 2016. There are also several associate countries. These include Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Peru, and Suriname. Associate members participate in the group but do not have the same full rights as the core members.

The history of Mercosur began with a desire for regional unity. Long ago, South American nations often had competing interests. They sometimes engaged in various wars and conflicts. In 1941, Brazil and Argentina tried to form a customs union. This failed due to diplomatic differences during the Second World War. Later, leaders sought new ways to connect their economies. In 1985, President José Sarney of Brazil and President Raúl Alfonsín of Argentina signed the Iguaçu Declaration.

This was a major step toward economic integration.

Following that declaration, the two nations signed more agreements. They created the Argentina-Brazil Integration and Economic Cooperation Program. In 1990, the leaders signed the Buenos Aires Act. This act aimed for total customs integration between the two countries. By 1991, the Treaty of Asunción was signed. This treaty officially established the Southern Common Market. Paraguay and Uruguay joined the process as well.

To manage its complex work, Mercosur uses specific institutions. The Common Market Group handles many technical tasks. It consists of four full members and four alternate members from each country. The Common Market Council is the highest authority. It manages political decisions and ensures everyone meets deadlines. The group also established the Mercosur Parliament in 2004.

These bodies help keep the trade bloc organized and stable.

Mercosur is an incredibly powerful economic force. In 2023, the bloc generated a nominal annual gross domestic product of 5.7 trillion US dollars. This figure is measured using purchasing power parity.

This massive number makes Mercosur the 5th largest economy in the world. The bloc also ranks very high on the human development index. This shows that the group helps improve the quality of life for its citizens. It connects South American nations to the wider global market.

Beyond simple trade, the bloc focuses on human connection. In December 2014, Mercosur reached an agreement with the International Organization for Migration. This agreement helps people move across borders more easily. This movement includes workers and their families. The bloc also works to prevent unfair trade practices. Members use national laws to stop imports influenced by unfair subsidies. By doing this, they protect their own local industries.
