Many years ago, countries in this area often had wars. They also had different ways of trading. In 1985, leaders from Brazil and Argentina met. They signed a paper to work together. This helped their economies grow. Soon, Paraguay and Uruguay joined the group. They signed the Treaty of Asunción in 1991. This treaty made the Mercosur team official.

Today, the group has five full members. These are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Venezuela is also a member, but it was suspended in 2016.

The group helps goods move easily between lands. They also help people move across borders. This is done through a customs union. A customs union means members use the same trade rules. This makes trade fair for everyone. In 2023, the group was a very large economy. It was the 5th largest in the world.

Working as a team helps these nations stay strong. It also helps them connect to the rest of the world.
