ECOWAS is a group of countries in West Africa. It started on May 28, 1975. The group was made to help countries work together. They want to make trade easy for everyone. This helps people in the region live better lives.

Members of ECOWAS can often move and live in each other's lands. The group also helps with tourism. Sometimes, ECOWAS sends soldiers to help keep peace. They do this when there is trouble in a country.

Recently, some things changed. Three countries named Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger left the group. These countries had new military leaders. They joined a new group called the Alliance of Sahel States. They officially left ECOWAS in early 2025.

ECOWAS leaders still want to talk to them. They hope to find a way to work together again. Right now, there are 12 member states in ECOWAS. Some speak English, some speak French, and some speak Portuguese. The group works to keep democracy strong in West Africa.
