Six countries helped start it. These were Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany. They wanted to work together on money and trade. This group was also called the European Common Market.

In 1962, they set fair prices for farm goods. By 1968, they removed taxes on some trade. In 1973, new countries joined. The United Kingdom, Denmark, and Ireland became members.

Later, Greece joined in 1981. Spain and Portugal joined in 1986.

In 1979, people voted for the European Parliament for the first time. This made the group more active. In 1993, the EEC became the European Community. It grew to include a single market. This let goods and people move freely. In 2009, the group changed again. The European Union took over its work. Today, the rules from the old treaties still help the Union work.
