ECOWAS is a large group of countries in West Africa. It is a political and economic union of twelve nations. These countries work together to help their people thrive. The group wants to reach "collective self-sufficiency" for everyone. This means they want to be able to take care of themselves. They aim to build a single large area for trading goods. This helps to raise living standards for people in the region.

This union works by following many important rules and plans. One plan is called the Free Movement of Persons Protocol. This allows citizens to enter and live in other member states. Another plan is the Ecotour Action Plan for 2019 to 2029. This plan helps to grow the tourism industry in each country. ECOWAS also acts as a peacekeeping force during hard times. Member states sometimes send joint military forces to help during unrest.

History shows how this group began many years ago. Many West African states became independent in the 1960s and 1970s. These new nations faced hard jobs with economic development. They realized they could not solve every problem alone. To fix this, they signed the Treaty of Lagos on May 28, 1975. Later, they signed a new version of the treaty in 1993. This happened in Cotonou, which is the largest city in Benin.

There are many interesting facts about the members of ECOWAS. Currently, there are twelve member states in the group. Five of these countries speak French and five speak English. Two of the members speak Portuguese. Most members were there at the start in 1975. Cape Verde joined the group a bit later in 1977. In 2024, things changed when three countries decided to leave. Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger joined the Alliance of Sahel States.

The departure of these three countries happened in early 2025. Their official exit from the bloc took effect on January 29, 2025. This happened after they were suspended following military takeovers. ECOWAS leaders still want to find a way to talk. They hope to find a negotiated solution for everyone. The group continues to work for democracy and justice. It remains a very important part of the African Economic Community.
