The Treaty of Rome is a very important set of rules for Europe. It helped create the European Economic Community, which many people call the EEC. This treaty is still a major part of the European Union today. It was designed to help different countries work together more closely. One goal was to make trade easier between these nations. It also helped create a common market for many things.

This plan worked by making trade much simpler. The treaty suggested lowering customs duties, which are taxes on goods from other lands. It aimed to build a customs union among the member states. This meant goods, workers, services, and money could move more freely. The treaty also set up new ways to manage important things. It created a Common Agriculture Policy and a Common Transport Policy. It even established the European Commission to help lead.

Before this treaty, leaders were already working on peace. In 1951, they signed the Treaty of Paris. This created the European Coal and Steel Community, or ECSC. A man named Jean Monnet had the original idea for this. He wanted to link coal and steel production together. This was meant to stop wars between countries like France and West Germany. The ECSC helped build a foundation for the later treaty.

The big signing happened on March 25, 1957. Six countries were part of this historic moment. These countries were Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany. They met at the Palazzo dei Conservatori on Capitoline Hill in Rome. The treaty officially started working on January 1, 1958. Later, the treaty changed names several times. In 1992, the Maastricht Treaty removed the word "economic" from its title. In 2009, the Treaty of Lisbon gave it a new name.

In 2007, people celebrated the 50th anniversary of the treaty. In 2017, many people gathered in Rome for the 60th anniversary.
