Euratom is a special group for countries in Europe. Its full name is the European Atomic Energy Community. It was created to help countries work together on nuclear power. This group helps build a market for nuclear energy. Member countries develop this energy and share it with each other. They can also sell extra energy to countries that are not members.

Working with nuclear energy is a big job. It requires a lot of money and many experts. Euratom helps by coordinating research for peaceful uses. It also works on radiation protection to keep people safe. The group helps safeguard nuclear materials so they are used correctly. They even help with the construction of the International Fusion Reactor.

Many years ago, leaders saw a need for new energy. In 1956, leaders met at the Château of Val-Duchesse to talk. They wanted to find ways to use nuclear power in Europe. France wanted to develop this energy without relying on other large lands. At the same time, coal deposits in Europe were running out. This made finding new energy sources very important for everyone.

On March 25, 1957, leaders signed the Treaties of Rome. This included the Euratom Treaty and the EEC Treaty. These treaties officially started on January 1, 1958. Louis Armand was the first leader of the Commission. He led a study that showed Europe needed more nuclear energy. Other leaders included Étienne Hirsch and Pierre Chatenet.

Euratom has changed a lot over time. In 1967, several groups joined to form the European Communities. Later, in 1993, the Maastricht Treaty helped create the European Union. Even though Euratom is part of the EU family, it is legally separate. This means it has its own rules. The United Kingdom left the group in 2020. Now, the UK and Switzerland work with Euratom as associated states.
