Brexit was the name for when the United Kingdom left the European Union. The word is a mix of "Britain" and "exit."

This was a huge change for how the UK works with other countries. For a long time, the UK was part of a group of nations. This group helped countries work together on many things. When the UK left, it had to make new rules for itself. It also had to make new deals with its neighbors. This process changed how laws are made in Britain.

The process of leaving took many years of hard work. First, the UK had to tell the EU it wanted to leave. This is called invoking Article 50.

Then, leaders from the UK and the EU had to talk. They had to agree on how trade and travel would work. These talks were very difficult and caused many arguments. Sometimes, the UK Parliament could not agree on a plan. This led to delays in the date the UK would officially leave. Eventually, a deal was reached to help the two sides work together.

The history of the UK in the EU began a long time ago. The UK joined the European Communities on 1 January 1973.

Before that, there was a vote in 1975 to see if they should stay. In that vote, 67.2% of people chose to remain members. For many years, some groups in the UK did not like the EU. They were called Eurosceptic groups. By the mid-2010s, these groups became more popular. This led to a big decision for the whole country.

In 2016, the UK held a special vote called a referendum.

On 23 June 2016, people voted on whether to stay or leave. The result was very close. About 51.9% of people voted to Leave the EU. Most of England and Wales voted to leave. However, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain. This vote changed the leaders in the UK government. David Cameron resigned, and Theresa May became the new Prime Minister. Later, Boris Johnson also became Prime Minister during the process.

Brexit connects to how countries talk to each other today. The UK officially left the EU on 31 January 2020.

After that, there was an eleven-month transition period. During this time, the UK still followed many EU rules. This helped give everyone time to get ready for the change. On 30 December 2020, a new trade deal was signed. This deal helps the UK and the EU trade goods. It shows how countries try to stay friends even after big changes.
