The UK joined the group in 1973. For many years, people argued about being members. Some groups did not like the EU rules. In 2016, the UK held a big vote. This was called a referendum.

People had to choose to stay or leave. About 51.9% of people voted to leave. This result was very close. It led to many changes in the government. Prime Minister David Cameron resigned after the vote. Theresa May became the new leader. She started talks to leave the EU. These talks were very hard and took a long time.

There were many disagreements in Parliament. The UK finally left on 31 January 2020. After that, there was a transition period. This was a set of steps to help the change go well. The UK and the EU signed a new trade deal in late 2020. This deal helps them work together now.
