The Caribbean Community is a large group of countries working together. People often call this group CARICOM. It is a union of 15 member states. This includes 14 nation-states and one dependency. There are also five associate members in the Americas and the Atlantic Ocean. The main goal is to help these lands work together. They want to share economic benefits fairly. They also try to coordinate how they speak to the rest of the world.

This group works by following special rules and plans. One big plan is the CARICOM Single Market and Economy. This makes it easier for members to trade goods. It also helps with security and foreign exchange. Some members even allow people to move between lands more easily. For example, four members started full freedom of movement in 2025. These lands are Barbados, Belize, Dominica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

CARICOM has a long history of helping neighbors. It began in 1973 with the Treaty of Chaguaramas. The first four founding members were Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. Before this, there was a group called the Caribbean Free Trade Association. That group helped English-speaking countries stay linked after a different union ended in 1962. In 2001, leaders signed a new treaty in Nassau, The Bahamas. This new treaty helped the group grow even stronger.

Many different people and places make up this community. The headquarters is located in Georgetown, Guyana. The leaders of the 15 states take turns being the Chairman. This role rotates among the different heads of government. The group also uses many different languages to talk. English was the only working language for a long time. Now, they use Dutch, French, Haitian Creole, and Spanish. This helps everyone participate in the community.

CARICOM connects to many other big organizations. It has observer status at the United Nations General Assembly. It also works with the European Union through a special agreement. This agreement is known as CARIFORUM. This link helps with trade and investment between the two groups. CARICOM also helped start the Association of Caribbean States in 1994. By working as a team, these many islands and lands can tackle big jobs together.
