It acts as a bridge for many different people across East Africa. Experts say between 150 million and 200 million people speak it. Many use it as a second language to talk to others. It is a primary language for many in Tanzania and Kenya. In Tanzania, about 70.4% of people use it at home.

This language helps many different groups live and work together.

The language is built from many different parts. Its core comes from Bantu languages of the East African coast. These original roots are found in languages like Unguja and Pemba. However, Swahili also borrowed many words from other places. About 40% of its words come from Arabic. It also has words from Portuguese, English, and German. Some words even come from Persian and Malay. This mix of words shows how different cultures met on the coast.

History shows how the writing of Swahili has changed. Long ago, it was written using the Arabic script. The earliest known written letters were sent from Kilwa in 1711.

Later, the alphabet changed to the Latin system we use today. This change happened during times when colonial powers ruled the coast. The Germans used the Latin alphabet in schools. The British later helped make it a formal language for the whole region.

Many important groups now work to support the language. The East African Community uses Swahili as one of its official languages. This group includes countries like Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda. In 2015, the East African Kiswahili Commission began its work. They help promote the language and help different regions work together. Even more countries, like Ethiopia and South Sudan, are teaching it in schools. The United Nations even named July 7 as Swahili Language Day.

Swahili is a living language that grows with new technology. People have even made computer tools to help with it. These tools include electronic dictionaries and spelling checkers. There is even software that can translate Swahili into English. This helps the language stay strong in our modern world. It remains a symbol of unity for many people. Julius Nyerere used it to help unify his nation in 1961.
