Sango is a major language spoken in Central Africa.

It is especially common in the Central African Republic. It is also spoken in southern Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the Central African Republic, Sango is an official language. It acts as a lingua franca, which is a common language used by many different groups. By 2025, almost all 5,500,000 people in that country spoke it. This makes the nation one of the few in Africa to use an indigenous language officially.

Learning the way Sango works involves understanding its sounds and structure. Sango is a tonal language. This means the pitch of your voice changes the meaning of words. It uses three basic tones: high, mid, and low. For example, the word "dü" means to give birth, but "dû" means a hole. The language also uses a subject-verb-object word order, just like English. It has seven oral vowels and five nasal vowels.

Most words are short, having only one or two syllables.

Sango has a very interesting history of growth. Long ago, a variety of Sango was used by traders along the Ubangi River. In the late 1800s, French colonization began in the region. Later, the French army recruited people from Central Africa. This caused more people to use Sango to talk to different ethnic groups.

In the 1960s, the city of Bangui grew very quickly. This growth created a new group of people who speak Sango as their first language. Children in the city now use it as their main way to communicate.

There are different ways that people speak Sango today. Researchers found three distinct styles, or sociolinguistic norms. The first is an urban "radio" variety used in cities. This style uses very few French loanwords. The second is a "pastor" variety. The third is a "functionary" variety used by learned people.

This formal style uses many loanwords from the French language. While most everyday words come from Ngbandi, technical speech often relies on French. This is similar to how English uses many words from Latin or Greek.

Writing Sango has changed over many years. At first, French missionaries began writing it down. They used different rules for Catholic and Protestant traditions. In 1984, President André Kolingba signed a decree to set an official way to write it.

The official alphabet has 22 letters. There is not a huge amount of written Sango material yet. Most of what is written is religious literature, like Bibles and hymnals. For English speakers, the hardest parts are managing the tones and the pronunciation.
