It sits near the wide Indian Ocean and includes many different lands. The region has a northern part called the Horn of Africa. This area includes countries like Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea. Some people define the region more narrowly. They might only mean Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Others include many more nations in groups like the East African Community. This group includes the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. It also has island nations like the Seychelles and Mauritius nearby.

This region has a very deep history involving early humans. Scientists have found many old fossils in places like Ethiopia and Kenya.

Some research suggests modern humans may have lived here a long time ago. At a site called Olorgesailie in Kenya, experts found signs of early human behaviors. These people used pigments and traded goods like obsidian stone.

They may have moved through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. Long ago, the sea levels were much lower there. This might have allowed people to cross using simple rafts. This makes East Africa a very important place for studying our past.

Many different groups of people moved through this land over many years. About 2,500 to 3,000 years ago, Bantu-speaking people began a long journey. They moved from West Africa toward the east.

These migrations brought new ways of farming to the region. The Bantu people also learned about cattle from their neighbors. They met other groups, such as the Cushitic people, along the way. Over time, these different groups mixed together. This created new communities and shared knowledge across the land.

Ancient history shows that East Africa was a busy place for trade. The Kingdom of Aksum was a strong empire in Eritrea and Ethiopia. It lasted from about 100 CE to 940 CE.

Aksum was a famous marketplace for valuable things like ivory. They even made their own money to help with trade. The ancient Egyptians also knew of a land called Punt. They thought Punt was located near the Red Sea coast. This shows that people have been traveling and trading here for thousands of years.

On the coast, a unique culture began to grow. Arab and Persian traders traveled across the Indian Ocean to reach the coast. They met the local Bantu people living there.

This meeting led to the Swahili culture and the Swahili language. The language has many words from Arabic, but its structure is African. This culture helped create many famous city-states along the coast. Today, East Africa remains a place where many different histories and cultures meet. It is a region shaped by movement and connection.
